March 2007
"Message from Duson Town Hall"
Our New Water Tower is now on-line. We went from 55,000-gallon tower to 200,000-gallon tower. This tower will meet the town's storage demand and ensure a more efficient water system. Our Fire Department ratings will improve also. Through the efforts and efficiency of John Lagneaux and the Duson Council our Town was able to afford such a project at a cost of almost $700,000 and paid for solely by local funds. On February 22, 2007 we held a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony dedicating the tower to Town Workers, Councilmen, our citizens, and my husband John Lagneaux. Our old water is scheduled to be torn down on March 19th. We have purchased a new police unit (2007 Chevy Impala) for our police department. This unit should be ready for use by April. We also purchased a new 2007 Dodge Ram for the street department, which is in use now. Our New Fire Truck should be arriving sometime in March. We now have a web site for your use: www.townofduson.org. We have two new businesses that opened in February. T. & J. Store and Lock located at 600 East First Street and Beverly Cabinet Shop located at 9211 Cameron Street. We wish them well. Our town clerk, Harriet O'Brien, will be receiving a service pin from Louisiana Municipal Clerks Association for 20 year of service with the Town of Duson. The Town is continually pursuing State and Federal grants to fund all or portions of various projects in Duson and we desire to provide an update on current and pending projects.
First, through a $10,000.00 State Grant the Town is currently addressing two (2) drainage problems; one on First Street and the other at the Town's sewer treatment plant. We used the State funds to purchase seven hundred (700) feet of drainage pipe and the Town's public works department will install the drainage pipe. We feel that this is a cost effective way to utilize this grant as opposed to hiring a Contractor to do the entire project.
We also applied for a $30,000.00 State Grant to upgrade one of the Town's major drainage out falls located in the western part of the Town, west of Ontario Street and north of Highway 90 and the railroad tracks. This project would entail dredging this channel to the proper grade and removing all of the trees and other obstacles that impede the flow of water. We should hear if we are successful in obtaining these grant funds for this project this spring.
The Town should also hear this summer on a $449,955.00 Community Development Block Grant for sewer system improvements. This project entails replacing the substandard sewer collection lines along Kevin Drive plus repairing the leaking sewer collection lines in the older parts of the Town. To increase our chances of receiving this significant amount of grant funds to address this public health concern, the Town will interject $160,300.00 of local funds as matching funds.
Mayor's Closing Remarks
Let me take time to thank you, the residents of the Duson, for allowing me to represent you as your Mayor. It is an honor to take my husband's place and continue moving forward with all of his goals and dreams for the Town. John took great pride in his job and as your new Mayor I plan on doing the same. Thank you again for all your kind expressions of sympathy during our loss.
Remember that should you need to speak to me that my door at Town Hall is always open.
Sincerely,
_____________________ Susie Lagneaux, Mayor Town of Duson
